Spiritual warfare is not a small part of the Christian life and the ministry of the Church; it is our baseline. Nearly every challenge and decision we make as Christ-followers will be influenced by spiritual forces: the Spirit of God, the forces of evil, and our own nature, which is also fundamentally spiritual. This song is a reminder to think in both spiritual AND militaristic terms. When we say, "the battle is the Lord's," we are saying two things. First, we are remembering that WE WIN; victory is assured to anyone who is on the side of Christ! But second, we are remembering that this earthly struggle is not really about US; it is about God. The key to not losing heart is to remember that the portion of our whole life that is on this earth is fairly small, when you consider the eternal life Jesus offers to those who fight His battle. Our hope is not fully realized during the war, but after the war is over!
